Eric added extra insulation to the roof and basement walls, installed a rooftop solar array, and most recently swapped out old gas equipment for highly efficient electric systems. A heat pump water heater now provides hot water while also keeping the basement dry, and a Mitsubishi cold-climate heat pump handles both heating and cooling. With these changes Eric was able to eliminate his home’s natural gas connection, saving the monthly connection fee while using cleaner, more efficient electric options.\nThe cost savings have been noticeable. The heat pump has lowered cooling costs by about 30% while keeping the home comfortable through hot summers, and the solar panels continue to offset a portion of total electricity use. Heating costs have gone up somewhat in winter, but overall the Eric estimates they now use about 40% less energy than before.
