Municipal Electric Forum with Don Kom
February 10 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

On Monday evening, February 10, Decorah Power will host the first of a series of educational events regarding the upcoming March 4th referendum on establishing a Municipal Utility for Decorah. The event will take place in 206 Valders on the Luther College Campus from 5:30 – 7 pm. This event is free and open to the public.
Monday’s featured speaker is Don Kom, the director of the municipal electric utility in Ames, IA. Don joined the City of Ames as the Director in 2006. In his role, he plans, directs, and coordinates all activities of the utility. He works in tandem with the Ames City Council and the City Manager to achieve the goals and priorities of the City while operating, maintaining, and innovating Ames’s electrical infrastructure.
Monday’s open forum will include an introduction by Don and a Q&A session facilitated by Joel Zook, the former Energy Services Coordinator of the Ames municipal electric utility (MEU), and current Program Manager of the Iowa Energy Fund. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions about how MEUs serve their communities and keep energy dollars local.
Don is part of a series of events planned by Decorah Power, a local nonprofit, to help the Decorah Community learn more about the March 4th referendum and how municipal electric utilities benefit their local communities.
On March 4th, Decorah citizens will vote to establish a municipal electric utility. This would give Decorah the legal standing needed with the Iowa Utilities Commission to determine if a Decorah MEU can provide more reliable and affordable power than Alliant Energy.
