Plug-in balcony solar arrays are beginning to attract attention in the US after rapid growth in Europe. The idea first gained traction in Germany, where millions of renters and apartment dwellers have installed these systems to produce their own electricity and lower utility bills.
The size of these systems is relatively small. Germany recently increased the allowable size of plug-in systems to 800 watts from 600 watts, which is enough to power a few appliances. By contrast, conventional rooftop systems often exceed 4,000-10,000 watts and often are sized to offset most of a household’s electricity usage. Plug-in systems cannot replace full-scale rooftop solar, but they may offer an accessible entrypoint for renters, condo owners, those without available roof space, or those who otherwise couldn’t participate.
The promise of plug-in balcony solar lies in its accessibility. The DIY solar panel kit is designed to plug directly into a standard wall outlet. Kits are inexpensive, easy to install, and – as is the case in Europe – don’t require major permitting or electrical work. These factors open the door to users who have traditionally been excluded from solar energy.
Affordability is another factor that contributes to high adoption. Depending on the market, conventional rooftop arrays typically run $2.00-$3.50 per watt of installed capacity. So for the customer that installs a 5,000 watt system (5kW), the total all-in cost might be $10,000 to $17,500. On the other hand, DIY plug-in solar kits sell online for $1.00-$1.50 per watt. At that lower price point, the payback period for balcony systems can be just a few years, or roughly half that of a conventional rooftop array. For renters, the appeal is perhaps more practical. Balcony solar offers a way to lower monthly bills without the need to own a roof or make a long-term investment.
But don’t get too excited. The biggest challenge to plug-in solar here in the United States is how our electric system is regulated. Net metering rules and electrical codes generally require solar arrays to be hard wired into a home’s electrical panel, rather than plugged into an outlet. Utilities are also cautious of customers back-feeding power into the electrical grid and solar customers that do back-feed into the grid are regulated through standardized interconnection processes. As a result, plug-in solar faces steep policy and regulatory hurdles before it can be broadly adopted here.
There are green shoots, however.
Earlier this year Utah became the first state to find a path forward for balcony solar. The state legislature directed regulators to create a pathway for plug-in systems by clarifying standards and establishing equipment technical standards. The first manufacturer, EcoFlow, recently launched a plug-in kit called STREAM which supports power output up to 1,200 watts. The EcoFlow kit can also be paired with a proprietary battery to absorb excess power production for times when solar production exceeds the inverter’s maximum power output of 1,200 watts. Utah’s experience will hopefully demonstrate that this type of product can work here, while still addressing utility and safety concerns.
If Utah’s pilot is successful, other states could follow suit in the coming years, particularly as customer demand for lower-cost, simple solutions grows. In fact, consumer choice might ultimately be the driving factor going forward. In Europe, many countries have yet to explicitly allow plug-in solar, despite households moving forward anyway. And here in the United States, North America-compatible plug-in systems from manufacturers other than EcoFlow are already being sold online, even though they lack formal approval for installation.
Balcony solar might represent a promising shift toward a more accessible solar market for those who would not otherwise be able to participate. While regulatory hurdles remain, the success of these systems in Europe plus Utah’s approach suggests a future where generating your own power is no longer limited to homeowners.
