Decorah Tops the Chart of Energy Star Buildings Per Capita

Decorah is becoming known as a progressive community, and the Winneshiek Energy District is doing its part to promote energy sustainability. Two recent newsworthy announcements confirm Decorah as a statewide leader in green building and energy efficiency.

For the past year the Energy District has facilitated the Energy Star application and certification process for many commercial buildings in Decorah. First Lutheran Church and First United Methodist Church became two of the most recent additions to Decorah’s seven Energy Star rated buildings. Other Energy Star buildings in Decorah include JC Penny’s, Oneota Community Food Coop, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Erdman Engineering and Ace Hardware.

The level of commitment to energy efficiency and green building practices in Decorah is exceptional and we are very proud of the number of Energy Star rated buildings in our small community. We are also excited by the potential to add two more certified buildings which we hope to announce soon.

The Energy District is also very pleased to share that the achievements by First Lutheran and First United Methodist churches earned a commendation from President Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency.

“I’m glad First Lutheran is modeling good energy stewardship,” says Jim Martin-Schramm of First Lutheran, “and I’m grateful for all of the assistance the Winneshiek Energy District provided as we made investments in energy efficiency.”

With the addition of First Lutheran and First United Methodist to Decorah’s list of Energy Star certified buildings, Decorah now leads the state in number of Energy Star certified buildings per capita (2010 census).
